Is It Heartburn or Gastroesophageal Disease? 

If you've ever experienced a burning sensation in your chest, you may think you have typical heartburn. But, that burning sensation may also be something more serious called, gastroesophageal disease (GERD) or acid reflux.

Heartburn effects nearly everyone at least once in their lifetime. It often shows up when a person eats something spicy or ends their night with a heavy meal. It can also happen to women who are in their late stages of pregnancy.

Yet some of us find no relief from those burning sensations and often times things become worse. What we may have misdiagnosed as heartburn could actually be gastroesophageal disease (GERD). The disease can ruin us both emotionally and physically. Often times we're unable to concentrate in our waking hours and our nights are Sleeplessness.

The Symptoms of Acid Reflux and Heartburn 

Your doctor can help

Of course there are some over-the-counter medications that may be able to help fight the symptoms of acid reflux (GERD). However, a simple medication may not always work. If that is the case, you may want to tell your doctor.

He or she will be able to diagnose whether your symptoms are simply heartburn or GERD related. Your doctor may ask you if your symptoms are chronic or if they're only an occasional problem.

Generally most patients who experience chronic symptoms are victims of GERD. The heartburn usually happens more than twice a week, and the burning sensation is constant.

Some victims may have a more serious form of the disease. They may find it difficult to swallow food and even liquid.

When you're a victim of simple heartburn, you may notice your symptoms happen both day and night. However, Acid Reflux sufferers often experience their symptoms at night while sleeping.

If you believe you only have a case of simple heartburn, you may want to keep track of the frequency of your symptoms just in case. You'll also want to keep track of how severe the symptoms are and what caused it.

If you find that you need to alter your lifestyle because of the ongoing symptoms, you'll probably want to have a talk with your doctor about the possibility of having acid reflux disease.
